Surgery of throat cysts (Lateral & Median Neck Cyst)

Professional Treatment of Neck Cysts

Charlottenlund Private Hospital offers the removal of neck cysts. These cysts can be located in the middle of the neck, known as a median neck cyst, or on the side of the neck, known as a lateral neck cyst.

Before scheduling surgery, it is essential to ensure an accurate diagnosis. A biopsy and a scan must be available so that the surgeon can assess the extent of the procedure before it is agreed upon.

All surgeries are performed exclusively by permanently affiliated consultants who work as senior physicians in throat surgery at public hospitals. These procedures are not covered under the Extended Free Hospital Choice (DUF), as it does not include the removal of lateral and median neck cysts. However, they are available both privately and through health insurance.

We take pride in offering surgeries performed by some of the most skilled neck surgeons in Denmark.

  • What is a lateral neck cyst?

A lateral neck cyst is a fluid-filled "bubble" that forms on the side of the neck. It develops due to a small remnant of tissue that does not close properly during fetal development, later forming a cyst. The cyst is often invisible and symptom-free but can sometimes be felt as a small swelling on the neck.

In most cases, the cyst does not cause any issues. However, if it becomes infected, it can turn red, swell, and become painful. If the cyst is bothersome or infected, it can be surgically removed.

This is generally a benign condition, and once the cyst is removed, complications are rare.

  • What is a median neck cyst?

A median neck cyst is a benign, fluid-filled lump that can develop on the front of the neck, typically just under the skin in the center of the neck. It occurs due to a developmental error in the formation of the neck structures during fetal development.

The symptoms include a visible swelling on the neck, which is usually painless but can become tender if it becomes infected, often during infections. Treatment typically involves a simple surgical procedure where the cyst is removed along with part of the hyoid bone from which the cyst originates.
