WHAT IS INSOMNIA?

Insomnia, also known as sleeplessness, is a common sleep disorder that affects many people worldwide. It is characterized by difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up earlier than desired and being unable to fall back asleep. Insomnia can vary in intensity and duration and can be categorized as either acute or chronic.

SYMPTOMS OF INSOMNIA

The most common symptoms of insomnia are:

  • Difficulty falling asleep in the evening
  • Waking up frequently during the night
  • Waking up early in the morning without being able to fall back asleep
  • Feeling like you haven't slept, even after a full night in bed
  • Feeling tired or lacking energy during the day
  • Experiencing mood swings, irritability, or depression
  • Experiencing difficulty concentrating or memory issues

CAUSES OF INSOMNIA

  • Irregular bedtimes or a changing work schedule can affect your sleep rhythm.
  • Using electronics before bedtime, uncomfortable sleep environments, and caffeine or alcohol can all contribute to insomnia.
  • Daily worries and stressful events can disrupt sleep.
  • Chronic pain, asthma, allergies, and other medical conditions can lead to sleep difficulties.

Treatment of insomnia

  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule.
  • Create a calm and comfortable sleep environment.
  • Limit caffeine, alcohol, and large meals, especially in the evening.
  • Incorporate relaxation techniques such as meditation or deep breathing.
  • Try cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I): CBT-I is an effective therapy that helps change thought patterns and behaviors that negatively impact sleep.
