Operation of protruding ears

Safe and gentle surgery for straight ears

At Charlottenlund Private Hospital, we offer gentle and aesthetic surgery for protruding ears in both children and adults who experience discomfort due to the shape of their ears. We only perform procedures where there is a real need, and always based on the individual's wishes and well-being.

Cross-shaped ears can affect self-esteem – especially during childhood and adolescence, when appearance can receive a lot of attention. A small surgical procedure can have a big positive effect and give the child or adult greater security in social situations.

All surgeons are experienced ear, nose and throat surgeons and have performed many independent surgeries, so that you and your child receive the best possible treatment.

We offer

  • Gentle and precise surgery performed by experienced specialists.
  • Focus on natural results and minimal intervention for satisfactory results.
  • Safe environment before, during and after treatment – with time for questions and thorough guidance.
  • Full anesthesia for children under 15.
  • Children over 15 years of age are operated on under local anesthesia but can bring an iPad which we connect to a speaker so your child can enjoy a series or good movie - with good sound - while the surgeon operates.
  • Child-friendly atmosphere where we do everything we can to ensure that both children and parents have a good experience - parents can therefore stay in the room during the entire preparation and anesthesia and only leave the room when the surgeon is about to start and the child is confident about what is going to happen.

With us, it is important that you all feel seen and heard – and that you all experience the entire process as safe, caring and professional from start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are prick ears?

Protruding ears are ears that protrude further from the head than normal. This is most often due to a congenital variation in the ear cartilage – either because the cartilage is too soft, or because the natural fold in the ear (anthelix) is not developed as it normally would.

  • When should treatment be considered?

It is an individual assessment. Treatment is relevant if the child or adult feels embarrassed – for example, due to low self-esteem, teasing or discomfort with appearance. Many choose surgery at the age of 10-13, when the ears are fully developed, and the child is often aware of how they look and feel. In adults, treatment can be performed at any age.

  • How is the procedure performed?

The operation, called an otoplasty, is a minor procedure where the ear cartilage is shaped and placed closer to the head. This is done through an incision behind the ear, so the scar is minimal and almost invisible. In children under 14-15 years of age, we often perform the operation under general anesthesia - in older children and adults it can be done under local anesthesia. You go home the same day, and the ears must be protected with a soft headband for about 10 days.

  • Immediately after the procedure....

There is a low risk of complications, but as with all surgical procedures, swelling, discoloration, mild pain, or temporary loss of sensation in the area may occur. In rare cases, infection or the need for minor corrections may occur.
